Top Ten Questions. Get to know Ben Aguirre Photography

1. Please list the name and URL of your company

            Ben Aguirre Photography  -  www.baphoto.net

2. Where in San Diego are you locatated

            Santee, CA

3. What made you want to become a Wedding Professional in your field?

After training under leading wedding photographers, a number of clients repeatedly asked if they could refer me to their friends and family.  After starting my own wedding photography business, it was personally satisfying to be referred by word of mouth from previous clients and guests.

4. Can you please give an example of your work and tell us a little about this photo and why it is special to you.

This photo was taken at a very private and very simple wedding ceremony in Malibu, CA.  I’ve always believed that the very best   wedding images are more about the people, their love for one another, and living in this one wonderful moment rather than wedding images where you say “cheese” for the camera, then look up to see if the cake has arrived, or if your best man is running late, etc.  People in love  on their wedding day who tune out all the noise of the wedding day and live it to it’s fullest make for the most emotional and interesting images.  I often find that images like these are the ones new clients want to replicate for their wedding packages

5. During your initial consultation with a new client, what type of questions do you ask?

I ask a number of questions of my clients.  I want to know who they are and what’s important to them.  If I’m able to discover their exact expectations, I’ll know better how to guide them towards getting the results they are looking for.  I find this makes for fully satisfied clients.  And satisfied clients are happy clients!

6. What type of services do you offer?

We offer full-service medium to high end wedding photography.  Multiple photographers, assistants, studio lighting (when needed) for photographing the event and the most advanced digital editing available to make each image look  it’s very best.  We provide album services, large prints (and I mean large!), video projection services, on-site printing, and more.

7. Do you travel outside of San Diego County?

We do it all the time!  In fact, “Southern California and Beyond..”  is more than just a slogan on our website, it’s what our business has become.  We always like to travel to cool places, but we like working close to home too!

8. What new trends do you see happening in your field?

The evolution of the DSLR is amazing.  The cameras we use to capture still   images are capable of producing vastly superior video images than even the most expensive video cameras currently used by videographers.  Additionally, with the types of lenses we use for stills, we are capable of producing amazing cinematic effects normally only made possible by the use of tremendously expensive hollywood cinematic equipment.  It’s AMAZING!  You may have heard the season finale of the TV show “House” was filmed entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II Camera and Canon L-Series lenses.  Guess what?  We use them everyday!  This past year, we’ve begun training with a leading Cinematographer and film maker on the forefront of utilizing this technology.  We’ve begun to learn the  filming, audio, and editing process.  With our creativity, we believe we’ll be in solid position to be one of the first to really bring this technology to the mainstream bride.

9. What trends do think are on the way out?

Boring wedding pics that look like everyone else’s.  Today’s couples value quality, creativity, and individuality.

10.  What do you want Brides and Grooms know most about your company?

Honestly?  We want B&Gs to know that we love wedding photography! Delivering a wedding package to a client and seeing their response is one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do!

As a “boutique” wedding photography business, we’ve only been taking on a limited number of commissions per year so we can provide the highest quality service to our clients.  Since the early days, when we shot weddings for free for our portfolios, we’ve always felt that EVERYONE deserved, and should have access to, professional wedding photography for their most important day.  Over the years, we have become very good at what we do and have learned a few things along the way.  This year, we plan to roll out a new spin-off “affordable” wedding photography service for clients with budgets less than $2000.  We’re really excited about it!  This spin-off will have complete access to all the resources, know-how, and experience of Ben Aguirre Photography, but will be available to a wider group of clients at very affordable prices.  Now, there’s no reason to hire a Craigslist wedding photographer!

1. Please list the name and URL of your company

ABM Wedding Photography   -   www.abmweddingphotos.com

2. Where in San Diego are you located?

Our studio address is:  7920 Miramar Road Ste 121 San Diego CA 92126

3. What made you want to become a Wedding Professional in your field?

I fell in love with the art of documenting during my time as a photojournalist at various newspapers in San Luis Obispo County. Working as a staff photojournalist, I was constantly seeking misery and destruction for headline news. After a while it was hard to be passionate about negativity and I began my apprenticeship with one of the best wedding photography studios in Santa Barbara, Reflections Photography Studio. Wedding photography offers me a chance to make a meaningful impact on peoples lives on one of their most important days.

4.  Can you please give an example of your work and tell us a little about this photo and why it is special to you.

This photo is special to me for a number of reasons.  First, the San Diego Trolley is a very iconic feature to our amazing city.  I love the frozen reflection of Petco Stadium amongst the blur of the trolley.  One of my favorite things about this photo is that I’m using a technique that most portrait photographers do not.  In fact, landscape photographers usually use it.  It is called “Motion Blur,” which is extremely slow shutter speeds with the camera on a tripod to allow the sharp Bride/Groom and the motion of the trolley to be captured.  This is an example of how I look for photographic inspiration in all types of photography.

5. During your initial consultation with a new client, what type of questions do you ask?

-I generally start by asking basic questions about their wedding.

-Location, guest count, colors, wedding party details, wedding themes

-I always ask what they are looking for in photography

-I like to talk about how the couple met or how he proposed to her

6. What type of services do you offer?

-Wedding, engagement and event photography

                -Flush-mount coffee table albums

-Prints on: photographic paper, canvas and metal

                -Unlimited wedding day coverage

-No Disc Drama (clients receive high resolution files with rights and no studio logo)

7. Do you travel outside of San Diego County?

Yes, I travel all over the globe.  In fact, I just got back from a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic last week.

8. What new trends do you see happening in your field?

I’m noticing a new trend with Tilt/Shift lenses.  This is a special lens that is predominantly used for architecture photography, which allows the focus plane to cut diagonally through the frame as opposed to parallel to the bottom of the frame.  It is a little tricky to explain, but it offers a very unique effect.  Another trend that has been around for some time but is still going strong is the use of Filters.  I’m seeing a lot of “antique” filters being used.  Photo Booths are becoming very popular now also.

9. What trends do think are on the way out?

Anything but the “Flushmount” style album is outdated.  Abuse of the “Fish-eye” lens is on the way out also.  I have a “Fish-Eye” lens, and often love the shots, but I feel it should be used appropriately.

10. What do you want Brides and Grooms know most about your company?

Our goal is to create a photo essay that blends fine-art photography, photojournalism, and casual portraits. We strive to produce a visual story of your wedding in a more emotional and artistic way. Working throughout the day with a minimum of direction and posing allows you to relax and remember your wedding as a day spent with family and friends.

ABM Wedding Photography offers unlimited hours with EVERY package and we include a disc with no Disc Drama.  We would love for you to take a look at our website/Facebook and consider ABM for your wedding photography

Top Ten Questions. Ginger and Chip Splinter married October 16, 2010

1.       Was choosing your venue difficult or did you have the perfect place in mind before becoming engaged?

We had originally planned on a destination wedding to a friend’s ranch in Texas, but when that didn’t happen, we decided to have it right here where we live since most of our family and friends are in this area.

2·       How involved was your fiancé during the planning of the wedding?

He was totally involved in choosing the beautiful dress and gorgeous rings, but left the planning of the event to me.  He did ask to be kept in the loop, however.

3·       Did you go above or below your estimated budget? Which family members were involved with contributions?

We went above the estimated budget, but we took care of the expense ourselves (this is a second marriage and we’re 60+, but very young :)

4·       What was the one element of your wedding that you felt, no matter the cost, really enhanced your wedding?

I don’t want to sound like an ad but hiring A Dream Wedding was the best idea.  My best friend, Frankie, owner of Hartworks Floral suggested Sharon.  I wouldn’t have had the fabulous wedding without her.  I really didn’t know there were so many details to attend to.  The other things that made it wonderful… the flowers were spectacular and I’m very pleased we had live musicians at the ceremony.

5·       Looking back, what element of your wedding would you have changed or deleted?

I would’ve controlled who spoke at toast time since there was one very inappropriate toast and I would’ve asked to be informed when the food stations were being broken down so that Chip and I had a chance to eat something after the guests left.  Other than that, the ceremony in the backyard and the wonderful party at the base were perfect in every way.

6·       Was there one moment during the day that was exactly as you had dreamed it would be?

Walking down the aisle with my wonderful son who was wearing my dear Dad’s tux was very special and touching.  My Dad (and Mom) would’ve loved the entire event, especially since Chip wore his Navy Dress Mess Uniform and we celebrated where my Dad’s last duty station was, North Island.

7·       What unique touches did you add to your wedding that made it personal to you and your fiancé?

The ceremony was in the backyard and had a traditional intimate feeling which I loved.  We opted to have a big cocktail party with all finger foods including the dessert table.  We loved the bar which is a fully functioning navy bar when not used for events, decorated with all sorts of military memorabilia.  We were also quite pleased with our first dance.  Chip is a non dancer and we took 4 lessons.  We did a cocktail two-step with a little swing and lots of turns…it turned out great.

8·       If money were no object, would you have changed the guest list to a more intimate affair or invited everyone you knew to attend?

We did invite almost everyone we could think of who might enjoy the affair (120 to the reception and 400 people to the reception).

9·       What song did you chose for your First Dance, and why?

It was “I’m beginning to see the light”.  Our dance teacher said I had too much bounce in my step for a slow dance and she chose this one from the 4 choices I brought.  I also liked that it was only a minute and 48 seconds long…since Chip wasn’t a dancer.  Vernetta taught him lots of turns and she was right…it was perfect.

10·       Where was your Honeymoon destination?

We went to our home in Big Bear.  It’s a beautiful place to unwind.

Yes! We work also have a kitchen in Los Angeles, so we cover all of Southern California.

8.       What new trends do you see happening in your field?

Lots of mini appetizers and desserts. Guest are loving small bite cocktail parties and we are finding stations to bring lots of fun to a wedding reception. Brides and Grooms love that we provide local and organic foods, and they love how fresh everything it.

9.       What trends do think are on the way out?

Big over the top centerpieces. We are seeing lots of centerpieces featuring a collection of vases, or fruits. Or pieces of driftwood decorated with flowers and candles. People like to be able to see each other while eating, its a nice new trend

10.   What do you want Brides and Grooms know most about your company?

We love special requests and will work with our brides and grooms to create the menu of their dreams. Everything we do ad-hears to 4 main rules. We are

Fresh – Our products come straight from the farm to your plate, ensuring both freshness and fullness of flavor.

Local – We source our products from local California farmers to guarantee freshness and to minimize drive time. We make it a priority to visit the farms, to meet the farmers and to see exactly where our products are coming from – with love and care directly from our kitchens to you.

Seasonal – Because our products come from local farmers, everything we serve is seasonal: this provides the highest quality produce at just the right time of the year.

Taste – We taste everything raw before we buy it, and again before serving to ensure the most unique flavors and the very best quality.

Top Ten Questions. Priscilla and Richard Tapalaga married October 10, 2010

  • Was choosing your venue difficult or did you have the perfect place in mind before becoming engaged?

Since we are originally from NY, we didn’t really have any specific venue in San Diego in mind. However, what we did know was that we wanted the space itself to be interesting and not your traditional square box catering venue. That is why Sharon took us to places like the Diamond View Tower and El Cortez, where we ultimately wound up having our wedding. The one requirement we had was that the venue be able to accommodate both the ceremony and reception since we were not getting married in a church.

  • How involved was your fiancé during the planning of the wedding?

My fiancé was completely involved in the planning process. We made every decision together, which made the process a lot more manageable since we both have crazy work schedules. The only part of the process he wasn’t involved in was picking out my dress…my parents helped me out with that one. He saw elements of my outfit for the wedding day, like jewelry and possible hair styles, but he did not see my dress until the day of our wedding. Needless to say, he loved my dress and this made our reveal that much more special.

  • Did you go above or below your estimated budget? Which family members were involved with contributions?

We went above our original estimated budget. However, part of that had to do with the change in scope of our event. We went from wanting a small 30 person event to what ultimately happened on our wedding day with a 100 guest event. Still not too large of a party but certainly more than we originally thought we wanted. We revised our budget a few times but that was at our own request because we were adding extra elements to the wedding, i.e. shuttle transportation for our guests to and from the wedding, videography. We didn’t want these elements originally but later changed our minds.

At the expense of adding some additional elements, we changed our minds about other things to save costs. For example, we decided to go with a DJ instead of a live band, which saved on costs.

Also, we had several family members contribute to our wedding costs. The following were some of the things our family members paid for:

  1. Bride’s parents: Bride’s dress, wedding shuttle, alcohol for reception, bridal shower
  2. Groom’s parents: Rehearsal dinner, hotel room, bridal shower, bridal accessories
  3. Brothers-in-law & their wives/girlfriends: Bachelor & bachelorette parties, welcome baskets for out-of-town guests, bridal shower, bridal accessories

  • What was the one element of your wedding that you felt, no matter the cost, really enhanced your wedding?

Hiring our wedding coordinator, Sharon Cole. She helped us out considerably throughout the wedding planning process as well as made our wedding day run so smoothly. We are so grateful we decided to hire Sharon because she not only saved us a heck of a lot of time and headaches, but costs on several fronts, including bridal gown, jewelry, DJ, photography, etc. Therefore, even though this is an additional cost to the wedding budget, we ultimately wound up saving elsewhere which makes up for the cost, with the added benefit of not having to worry about each and every element of the wedding. Sharon had it all covered!

  • Looking back, what element of your wedding would you have changed or deleted?

We probably would have changed the caterer we used (Ranch Events). Sharon had warned us in the beginning that although this caterer is the more cost conscious option, they could be difficult to work with at times. This caterer was a one-stop shop in a sense – in other words, they provided us with our cocktail or d’oevres, catering, linens, flowers, and cake. Ultimately, they failed to deliver on flowers and cake, two elements that are definitely important to a wedding.

  • Was there one moment during the day that was exactly as you had dreamed it would be?

That would probably be when my fiance and I did our reveal. We were completely overcome with emotion and could barely hold back the tears. We have been dating for a very long time, but I had a feeling that the reveal would be a beautiful moment in our day…and it sure was.

  • What unique touches did you add to your wedding that made it personal to you and your fiancé?

My fiance and I are both very personable people, so we wanted our guests to feel that. Below are a few of the unique touches we added:

  1. We did our reveal at the hotel prior to our ceremony. Right after, we invited all our guests that were staying at the same hotel to come by for photos. This gave everyone a chance to see us before the party, which made for a nice and relaxing ceremony and reception afterwards. Also, it gave us a chance to actually hang out with our guests at cocktail hour instead of rushing to take photos.
  2. The El Cortez is a great space because it’s so self-contained. There is plenty of room to have both a ceremony and reception there, which is what we did. It’s just so warm and inviting, which completely reflects who we are as people. That’s the feeling we wanted to give our guests
  3. Our wedding favors were bags of our favorite candies. They were all set so beautifully by Sharon in a candy bar with everything displayed. Our guests could then customize how much they wanted of each type of candy to take home only the things they liked. We had like 5 types of candy and our monogram printed on the bags.

  • If money were no object, would you have changed the guest list to a more intimate affair or invited everyone you knew to attend?

Still would have invited everyone I knew to attend. In fact, if money were no object, I would offer to pay for certain guests as I know they are financially strapped and that was probably the primary reason they couldn’t come.

  • What song did you chose for your First Dance, and why?

These Arms of Mine by Otis Redding. This is such a soulful song that gives us goose bumps every time we listen to it. We both like Otis Redding a lot as well as other music from that genre. Plus, we both grew up with Dirty Dancing and that is one of the songs that bring Baby and Johnny together for the first time in the movie. I know, cheesy but romantic for us.

A close second and a song that we almost picked was Adele’s Make You Feel My Love. We loved that song just about as much. Instead, we chose to make this one of our last dances because we liked it so much.

  • Where was your Honeymoon destination?

Actually, we have not yet taken our honeymoon. We will probably do a snowboarding trip in February because we both love the outdoors and enjoy our time on the mountain. We also didn’t want to just jet off while our guests were still in town because most of them were from out of town. We just wanted to maximize the time we spent with everyone since we don’t know when the next time will be that we will see them. Our primary concern throughout the whole wedding weekend was our guests, making sure they feel comfortable and welcomed, and that they were having a good time. We enjoyed having them all out here and felt like they too had a good time taking a mini-vacation of some sorts.

Top Ten Questions. Brandi and Jaion Lee married May 29 2010

Here is my very first “Top Ten Questions” entry from one of my very favorite Brides this year Brandi (Caldwell) Lee

If you would like to submit your wedding for Top 10 Questions, email me at info@adreamweddingbysharon.com

1. Was finding your venue difficult or did you have the perfect place in mind before becoming engaged?

I did not have the perfect place in mind that fit my budget, but knew that I wanted an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception.  I knew I wanted a lot of green around the ceremony site, and I wanted to stick to my budget.  Before looking at venues, I did a lot of research on-line and created a comparison checklist.  On the checklist I compared price person, tax rates, and included amenities (champagne toast, floor length linens, wine with dinner, etc.)  Once I narrowed the results down to 5-7, I went to see each of them to determine in person which venue was right for my husband and me.

2. How involved was your fiancé  during the planning of the wedding?

My fiancé did not see the venue I picked until the day of the food tasting.  I made all the final decisions and consulted him only about the menu and the music.  He didn’t care to be involved with the rest of the planning, which was fine by me.  I knew I wanted things my way, and his opinions would only interfere with my exact vision.

3. Did you go above or below your estimated budget? Which family members were involved with contributions?

We went above our estimated budget.  The budget was originally set at $40,000, but I knew from research that I couldn’t get exactly what I wanted for $40,000, so I had a stretch budget of $48,000 and hit exactly that in the end.  The $48,000 also included $15,000 from my parents and $3,000 from other family members.  I had my grandmother, god-mother and aunts involved by asking them to pay for the wedding cake, the chocolate fountain, the ceremony musicians, and the dove release.  I also received an additional $500 dollars from a family friend.

4. What was the one element of your wedding that you felt, no matter the cost, really enhanced your wedding?

I had a few items that were non negotiable in enhancing the wedding.  One was the White Chocolate Fountain.  It was a deal breaker for me and very well worth it.  Also the Chiviari Chairs and White Dance Floor were mandatory items.  The level of class and elegance the chairs and dance floor brought to the wedding décor was irreplaceable.  Lastly, I think the dove release was a must have item for me.  It was something that my guests wouldn’t expect and created a great photo opportunity at the end of the ceremony.

5. Looking back, what element of your wedding would you have changed or deleted?

There are no moments from my wedding that I would change or delete.  I was very hands on and very specific in exactly what I wanted all the elements to look like for the wedding, and it turned out to be exactly what I always imagined.  If I could have, I possibly would have added a passed signature drink and an ice sculpture, but those were mandatory items for me so we didn’t include them.

6. Was there one moment during the day that was exactly as you had dreamed it would be?

The one moment that knew everything was coming together exactly as I dreamed it to be was when I first saw my ceremony site.  I got to peak at the ceremony site before everything began, and it was amazing!  100% of what I had envisioned plus the blooming flowers and green leaves of the resort’s garden made the ceremony site completely exceed all my expectations.  It was beautiful, elegant, and classy.

7. What unique touches did you add to your wedding that made it personal to you and your fiancé?

My fiancés last name begins with an L, so I thought it nice to have a lot of elements surround the letter.  We created “Lessons of Love” which were printed cards placed as décor during the cocktail hour.  The Lessons were Love, Life, Loyalty, Longevity, and Laughter.  Each lesson had the definition in relation to marriage printed under the word, and all were over a watermarked L on the printed card.  We also incorporated the L with the same font as the Lessons of Love cards into the seating chart, the cake topper, the menu cards, the personalized favor boxes, and the dance floor gobo.

8. If money were no object, would you have changed the guest list to a more intimate affair or invited everyone you knew to attend?

If money were no object, we would have had about 100 more invited guests attend our wedding. My family is very large, and many of them were left out because we could not go over 150 people per budget constraints.  There were also several of our friends that were sadly omitted from the list.  Also if money were no object, we would have had the wedding at the St Regis in Dana Point.

9. What song did you chose for your First Dance, and why?

We chose Everlove by Eric Benet.  I actually did not choose it, but left the song choices up to my fiancé.  He picked the song and shared it with me.  I started crying instantly listening to the words and melody, so that was that.

10. Where was your Honeymoon destination?

We honeymooned in St. Lucia at the Sandal Regency La Toc.  It was amazing with great good, great excursions, and a wonderful time to relax and unwind.  Sandals is always fun though, so we knew we wouldn’t be disappointed. Here is a the photo from Brant Bender Photography of Brandi and Jaion’s ceremony site. The moment Brandi saw it, I knew it was going to be a wonderful day. She never stopped smiling from  that moment on…
